"Fanciful Mobiles & 3-D Hollow Forms"

June 3, 2022

June 5, 2022
10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Meet Sarah Shriver, our instructor for the June workshop...

"I have been working in polymer clay for over 30 years. Until recently my work has revolved around creating intricate Mille Fiori canes for beads and jewelry. However, since last year, when the fires came again to Northern California, I felt compelled to make a shift in my work.  That shift has moved me toward work that feels lighter and more optimistic. The new forms and methods have resulted in a series of mobiles and hollow forms that feel playful and modern. It is a new exploration in form and one that seems to have endless potential."

Light and airy, these mobiles move with just a breath. The trick is in the balance - it’s fun and easy to achieve.

We’ll construct playful shapes from stainless steel wire and stretch various polymer color blends and simple cane patterns over them to create the individual elements. By using a simple system based on balance points, we’ll connect all the elements to make these uplifting mobiles!

We’ll then use some of the same techniques on a smaller scale, to make hollow pieces that are featherweight and ideal for jewelry.

In this class we will:

*Explore making 2 and 3 dimensional wire forms to be covered with a thin sheet of polymer.

*Construct a simple cane from one or two skinner blends. Students will use this cane and/or old canes, and/or translucent Cernit to stretch onto wire forms.

* Explore ways to alter the pieces, inviting students to figure out ways to make them personal.

*Construct a hanging mobile from about 7 - 10 of these pieces.

*Make smaller 3D hollow forms that can be used for jewelry.

We’ll be using stainless steel, brass and/or copper wire to make shapes, and stainless steel, or bronze wire to construct the mobiles. I will demonstrate some simple mini torch techniques and also ways to connect the wires without a solder joint.
